Early this morning, take a scenic cruise past the historic fortress of Kasr Ibrim, which, as far as i t goes, is the only Nubian monument that remains in its original place after the making of Lake Nasser. Landing is not allowed, of course, but guests can still view this remarkable archaeological spot from the sun deck and take really unforgettable photographs while your guide tells the surprising and quite fascinating story behind it.
Then, keep sailing toward the world-famous Abu Simbel Temples. At first, you’ll enjoy those stunning panoramic views, and only after that, you’ll go ashore for a guided visit. The Great Temple of Abu Simbel was constructed by Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. It’s widely considered one of Ancient Egypt’s most impressive architectural achievements. At the entrance, you’ll see four giant statues of the king standing guard, all facing outward, as if they’re still keeping watch. Close by, there is the lovely Temple of Queen Nefertari, devoted to Ramesses II’s cherished wife and also to the goddess Hathor. This is one of the rare temples across Egypt that was built specifically in honor of a queen.
Both temples were moved, piece by piece, during UNESCO’s international rescue initiative, block by block, so these priceless monuments could be preserved for the next generations to come. In the evening, guests can optionally attend the spectacular Sound & Light Show at Abu Simbel. With dramatic lighting, guided narration, and music, the incredible legacy of Ramesses II and the magnificence of his temples comes alive in a very memorable way.
