Overview

If you’re spending a few days in Cairo and want to get away from the city for a while, a day in Fayoum is a nice change of pace. It’s not a long drive from Cairo, but the scenery feels completely different once you get out of the city. Instead of traffic and buildings, you start seeing open desert, farmland, lakes, and small villages along the way.

The first stop is usually Lake Qarun. There isn’t really a need to do much here. You can walk around, take a few photos, sit for a bit, and enjoy the view. It’s a good place to slow down before continuing with the rest of the day.

After Lake Qarun, you’ll head towards Wadi El Rayan. The waterfalls are one of the main stops here, and they’re quite a contrast to the dry desert around them. After spending some time at the waterfalls, you’ll get into a 4x4 and head deeper into the desert.

This part of the trip is probably one of the most fun. The road isn’t exactly a road in the usual sense, and the 4x4 takes you across the sand and rocky areas around Wadi El Rayan until you reach Mudawara Mountain. Once you get there, you can stop for a while, walk around, and enjoy the views. From the higher points, you can see the desert stretching out around the lakes.

By this point, you’ll probably be ready for lunch. Having lunch out in the desert is a nice little break from the day. There’s no busy street around you, no traffic, and not much noise either, which makes the whole experience feel different from a normal day in Cairo.

After lunch, the next stop is Magic Lake. The lake sits right in the middle of the desert and is known for its changing colors. Depending on the light and the weather, the water can look completely different. You can spend some time there taking pictures, relaxing, or just sitting by the lake and enjoying the view.

From Magic Lake, you’ll continue to Tunis Village. It’s a small village that has become well known for its pottery and handmade crafts. You can walk through the village, visit some of the pottery workshops, and see a quieter side of local life. It’s a nice way to finish the sightseeing before heading back.

Then it’s time to make your way back to Cairo.

It’s definitely a full day, but you get to see quite a lot without spending the whole trip going from one crowded attraction to another. Between Lake Qarun, Wadi El Rayan, the waterfalls, the desert drive, Mudawara Mountain, Magic Lake, and Tunis Village, there’s a good mix of nature, desert scenery, and local life. If you’ve already spent some time exploring Cairo and want to see something a little different, Fayoum makes a great day trip.
