Overview

If you’ve already spent some time in Cairo and want to get away from the city for a bit, spending a few days in Fayoum is a good idea. It’s not very far from Cairo, but the drive takes you into a completely different setting. There are lakes, desert, farmland, and small villages, and the pace is much slower than what you’re used to in the city.

After breakfast, you’ll leave Cairo and drive to Fayoum. The first stop is Lake Qarun. You can spend a little time there, walk around, take some photos, or just sit and enjoy the view. It’s a nice and easy start to the trip before the desert activities begin.

From Lake Qarun, you’ll continue to Wadi El Rayan. The area has two lakes and natural waterfalls, so you’ll stop there for a while before heading further into the desert. Once you get into the 4x4, things become a bit more exciting. You’ll drive across sandy and rocky tracks, away from the main roads, with the desert stretching out around you.

The next stop is Mudawara Mountain. You’ll have time to get out of the car, look around, and enjoy the views from the mountain. On a clear day, you can see the desert and the lakes from above, and it’s a good spot for taking pictures.

After that, you’ll stop for lunch in the desert. It’s a simple break, but having lunch somewhere this quiet is a nice change from eating in the middle of Cairo.

Once you’ve finished lunch, you’ll head to Magic Lake. The lake is surrounded by desert and is known for the way its water can change color with the light and weather. You can sit by the lake for a while, take pictures, or just enjoy the scenery.

At the end of the day, you’ll go to your hotel in Fayoum and have the evening free to rest.

The following morning starts with breakfast before heading to Wadi El Hitan, also known as the Valley of the Whales. The area is famous for its whale fossils, which are millions of years old. What makes the visit interesting is seeing these fossils in the middle of the desert, in a place that was once covered by water.

You’ll have time to walk around the fossil area and learn about the whales that once lived here. After the visit, you’ll continue to Tunis Village, a small village overlooking Lake Qarun.

Tunis Village is well known for its pottery, and you can spend some time visiting the local workshops and looking around the handmade pieces. It’s also a nice place to simply walk around and see a quieter side of Fayoum.

After lunch, you’ll get back into the 4x4 for another drive through the desert. There will be a few stops along the way where you can get out, take photos, and enjoy the open landscape. Later in the afternoon, you’ll stop somewhere with a good view of the desert and watch the sunset before returning to your hotel.

On the last morning, you’ll have breakfast and check out. There’s some free time before leaving Fayoum, so you can relax at the hotel or take one last walk around the area.

After that, you’ll drive back to Cairo by private vehicle.

By the end of the trip, you’ll have seen a lot of Fayoum without having to rush through everything in one day. You’ll visit Lake Qarun, Wadi El Rayan and its waterfalls, Mudawara Mountain, Magic Lake, Wadi El Hitan, and Tunis Village, along with the desert 4x4 experience. It’s a good choice if you want a short break from Cairo and would rather spend a couple of days somewhere quieter.
